I finally did it!! I made a Family Command Center on this counter and I added a DIY black linen memo board with some bling. I was in desperate need for some organization in my life. This area is where all the junk accumulates. We needed this area to be efficient and the best way to do that was to make it a Family Command Center. I needed somewhere that wasn’t the fridge to post reminders for the family, a spot to keep coupons, a place to hang keys, a mail caddy, and some his and hers trays to corral the clutter. I am ecstatic that I was able to fit that all in to this little space and even happier to show it to you! Soon I will prepare a quick tutorial for how I made that memo board.
If you have been following along then you know that I am taking part in the $100 Room Challenge this month hosted by Erin of Lemons Lavender and Laundry. I started this hallway for the last round of the $100 room challenge back in July 2017. That LIGHT & BRIGHT HALLWAY MAKEOVER has made such a difference in my whole house. But the clutter found it’s way back into my life and so I decided to participate again to finish some of the projects that I didn’t get to the first time. This was the reality just last week.
NOT GOOD!!!
The first step was to make the countertop more resilient. I was so tired of it always looking scratched and marked up. So I got brave and tried contact paper.
Last week I shared the MARBLE CONTACT PAPER COUNTERTOP tutorial for how I got this look for $10 dollars without paint…

Family Command Center
That brings us to our new Family Command Center.
This is going to help tremendously. Organization here I come. No more searching for keys and coupons.
Let me show you what I incorporated…
I used the IKEA FINTORP SERIES to make this key holder and mail caddy station. It is very practical and looks great too. It is my son’s job to get the mail and now he finally has a place to put it instead of the kitchen counter.
I made that linen memo board from an IKEA VAGGIS NOTICEBOARD It is only $6.00 and it was the perfect size.
You know the saying..if you want something done you need to do it yourself. Well I couldn’t find a linen memo board, or any memo board for that matter, that I liked in the right size and at the right price. So I made my own. I will share a tutorial on that soon. If you scroll back up you can see it in the before picture. I wanted it to have a pocket for holding our coupons. I always lose them!! I also wanted it to be better looking than a plain old bulletin board. I am pleased with how it turned out. Just don’t look too close.
I got the linen at Hobby Lobby and it is already the cheapest I could find and then you can use a 40% off coupon. I also got those WOOD TRAYS there. They come 2 in a set. One large (pictured) and one small. So I got two sets so that I could get large trays and now I also have 2 small trays to use somewhere like the bathroom counter or holding my olive oil bottles.
I obviously staged these photos. But it was so fun to make a mood board for spring before real life takes over. I love wild greenery and flowers. Do you see her using her vintage scissors to trim the foliage in the photo? That will be me this spring. Clipping foraged greenery and flowers with my FORGED SCISSORS and filling unique vessels. Plus lots of blush pink!!! P.S. I got those pictures out of the Studio McGee Catalog.
Don’t you just love those FORGED SCISSORS in the copper and aged bronze? They really work good too.
So thanks to Pottery Barn and Studio McGee I have my spring inspiration. Those ferns are amazing!! How do you like my reading glasses? I am about to hit 40 and needed reading glasses. I say if you are going to wear reading glasses make them fun!!!! I linked a similar pair HERE
Last but not least a catch all for change from the Target Dollar spot. Or should I say three dollar spot?

You’re really cooking with gas now, Jess, and in command of organizing your home! I can see so many possibilities with that memo board but, hope you can keep that darling “mood board” for Spring up for a little while! It put me in the mood for Spring just looking at it! I also just love the cat eyed reading glasses, the vintage scissors and ooohhh ~ blush pink ~ my favorite!!
