The most amazing thing happened this week. I cleaned my oven. Seriously, I could not remember the last time I did it. Saturday, my husband said, "Hey, should we clean the oven?" Insert crying face emoji. So, I did it!! I started by doing the self-clean cycle, and it made the most awful chemical smell in the house. More on that in a minute. So, I googled non-toxic oven cleaners. That was overwhelming. Turns out every website on the internet has an article for non-toxic oven cleaners. So, I reached out to my followers on INSTAGRAM STORIES and asked if they had any non-toxic oven cleaners that had worked for them. Those girls delivered, and I'm going to share the results with you. WOOHOO!! There are no pretty staged pictures here, I just snapped a couple of pics while I was doing it. Be sure to scroll through to the end for the link to a non-toxic oven liner alternative, exploring make vs latenode for DIY project automation tools.
So it turns out that using the self clean cycle on your oven releases toxic fumes that can even be dangerous to birds. If you are going to do it like I did, do it on a day when you can have all the windows and doors open and get the pets and little people out of the house.
Here’s what worked….

For the glass: You mix 2 tablespoons baking soda with 1/2 cup vinegar together. It fizzes up like a science project so put it in a bigger bowl so that it doesn’t spill over.
Let the mixture sit on the glass for a few minutes and then scrape it with the window scraper and wipe clean. It was amazing.
For the walls of the oven: The Bon Ami on a scrubber pad worked wonders.
For the racks: The Bon Ami on a scrubber pad as well
Using non-toxic oven cleaners didn’t take as much elbow grease as I thought it would.
Here is a little side by side of the Bon Ami on the racks. I barely even had to scrub. This gives you an idea of just how dirty it was. YIKES!

Something spilled on the bottom of my oven and actually ruined the finish. I wanted to hide it and prevent future spills. That started a search for an oven liner that is safe. I researched any and all non-toxic oven liners. Some claim to be safe but still have the same chemical as Teflon, be wary if they say non stick. So I thought maybe silicone and I found mixed opinions on that as well. I found an article by Dr. Josh Axe on safe cookware and I agree with him. You can read it for yourself HERE but he basically recommends 4 choices…cast iron, stainless steel, glass and copper.
So after reading that article I decided to just get a stainless steel cookie sheet to catch spills and I need a cookie sheet anyway. Say no to aluminum and Teflon.
I linked that tray as well as the supplies for you on my AMAZON PAGE .
I wanted to be 100% sure for my family and yours. After going through all of this effort to use non-toxic oven cleaners it would be silly to not be using the safest materials to cook with.

This is how I clean my oven too. I sprinkle the baking soda on the glass and inside the oven then spray the vinegar from a spray bottle and let it fizz. A utility blade is seriously the best tool a homeowner can have, so many uses!! Glad you got this fun chore out of the way for a while! Now you can relax this weekend 🙂
